Fugue State

Countries and people live it, sometimes consciously, most times not. Daniel seeks escape after being threatened and abused for a viral post on social media. He meets Yusuf, a mysterious figure known for his lavish parties. Yusuf invites Daniel to join his crew to research a documentary on missing Batswana women, leading to discoveries about Yusuf and even Daniel himself. Fugue state is the key to conquering the matrix, not changing the world.

Proposition

Staggie’s writing has been compared to that of transgressive authors such as Anthony Burgess, Chuck Palahniuk and Irvine Welsh. Intertwining meta-narrative tropes from traditional epic poetry, with a loving yet scathing analysis of Cape Town’s contemporary landscape, Staggie has crafted a novel that highlights issues on every level of society – from the rich to the poor, between genders, and across differences.
