Sing down the Stars

Gold winner of the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature, winner of the Percy Fitzpatrick Award for Children’s and Youth Literature

Nuri wants more from life than just being a runner for crime boss Vadith, in the slums of Calan City. Yet when the young thief hears a strong psi-call that leads her to a secret facility, she is drawn into a project with other cadets chosen to pair with the emergence of a sentient star-ship. Yet it’s not all plain sailing for Nuri. Not only does her mixed-race heritage mark her as different, but her social caste puts her at a serious disadvantage to some of the privileged cadets. Fortunately, she has a team of friends to stand by her, as she navigates the complex social hierarchy previous denied to her. Though she is one of the few who heard the psi-call, it is nevertheless not a given that she will succeed, and forces are arrayed against her as she fights to make the final cut of those who’ll stand on the day of emergence.
